This year has gotten off to a great start for people seeking employer sponsorship, with 2,272 sponsored jobs being advertised in the first three months.

Chart - Sponsored Job No.s Jan-Feb-Mar 2016

As you can see, January started a little slow, with February hitting a high of 926 sponsored jobs; and March experiencing a drop in jobs, although still a significantly high number of jobs, at 757 advertised with employer sponsorship.

The industries that continue to demand oversees workers include Trades & Services, Healthcare & Medical, Recruitment and Hospitality.

Sponsored Jobs by Occupation - Mar 2016

Industries that have had a very low demand for overseas talent include Accounting, Administration, Senior Management, Government & Defence, Mining, Science & Technology and Real Estate.

Please see below for the full review of the availability of sponsored employment in each industry for March 2016.

Accounting

March 2016 has been quite consistent with January and February, seeing an insignificant number of jobs offering sponsorship in the accounting industry.

There were five positions offering employer sponsorship during March, which is actually an increase on the previous two months, which saw five in total. There were a mix of roles being offered, from Senior Manager to Graduate Tax Accountant, which was surprising to see.

If you are an accounting professional seeking employer sponsorship with no luck so far, your best chance is using the hidden job market to find work, and to make sure you position yourself well with a high-impact, professional Australian resume so that you can stand out from the heavy competition in this industry.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March:

  • Audit Senior
  • Graduate Tax Accountant
  • Senior Manager
  • In-House Accountant

These positions were based in Sydney NSW, Adelaide and regional SA.

Administration

There were no positions advertised in the category of Administration during the month of March, 2016.

This is not a big surprise considering that administration does not require the high-level of skills / qualifications that many other industries demand; and as such, there are plenty of local talent in the area of administration in Australia, so much so that employers do not need to look elsewhere.

The types of positions that are more likely to offer sponsorship in the field of Administration are senior level positions (10+ year’s experience) and in specialised fields.

If you are looking for a job in this category, I suggest you focus on the hidden job market, as you are more likely to find a sponsored job in this field if it is found through your range of influence, and a more proactive job search. You can learn more about using the hidden job market to find sponsored jobs by clicking here.

Advertising, Arts & Media

Sponsored jobs in the Advertising, Arts & Media category were considerably low this month, with seven positions being advertised, although this is an increase on the previous two months which only saw three positions in total.

All positions advertised during the month of March were sales positions with an advertising focus.

Advertising, Arts & Media is a specialised field, and I have seen clients get sponsored in these fields over the years, and they did so by using the hidden job market and trying their luck at applying for jobs that were not advertising sponsorship. All of these clients had their resume’s professionally written so that they stood out in their applications.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March:

  • Sales Consultant (Advertising Solutions) x 7

These positions were based in Melbourne VIC, Brisbane QLD and Gold Coast QLD.

Banking & Finance

March saw a reasonably slow month for the Banking & Finance industry, with only 23 positions being advertised as offering employer sponsorship, as opposed to the previous two months which saw a combined total of 128 jobs being advertised in this field.

All jobs advertised were Cognos TM1 roles; with no general banking and finance positions being advertised during March.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March:

  • Junior, Mid-Level & Senior TM1 Consultants
  • TM1 Practice Leads
  • Junior & Senior TM1 Developers

These positions were based in Perth WA, Adelaide SA, Brisbane QLD, Melbourne VIC and Sydney NSW.

Call Centre & Customer Service

There have been a surprising number of jobs offering sponsorship in the Call Centre field this year so far, with 19 positions being offered during January and February; and 12 during March.

Considering that sales positions in general are a strong area for employer sponsorship right now, it makes sense that sales professionals with call centre experience would also be in demand.

The main criteria to qualify for these type of roles is experience in a call centre environment, and a proven successful track record in sales.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March:

  • Business Development / Lead Generation Specialists
  • Telesales Executives
  • Professional Sales Consultant

These roles were based in Sydney NSW, Melbourne VIC, Brisbane QLD and Ipswich & Gold Coast QLD.

Community Services & Development

Although there were 10 positions advertised in the field of Community Services & Development in January & February this year; there were no positions advertised during March.

Since there had been very little positions advertised in this field in the previous 6 years or so; the 10 we saw at the start of the year were quite a surprise; and I believe are an indication that the demand for youth workers and social workers is increasing, and that we will see more positions being offered in this field as the year progresses.

Construction

The construction industry has been reasonably slow compared to previous years; although the roles we’ve seen advertised have been specifically construction roles (there is a separate industry for general trades positions), and does not necessarily include trades.

There were 9 positions advertised in construction during January & February 2016.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during January & February:

  • Window Installer / Carpenter / Glazier
  • Construction Estimator
  • OH&S Representative
  • Facade Engineers x 2
  • Construction Project Manager
  • Carpenter / Trainee Site Supervisor
  • Bricklayers x 2

7 of these roles were based in the Sydney NSW region, 1 in Melbourne VIC and 1 in Canberra ACT.

Consulting & Strategy

Consulting & Strategy has had a decent start to the year, with 16 jobs advertised in this field during January and February 2016.

However, March saw an increase, with around 15 positions alone in the area of consulting and strategy – mostly within the fields of IT and Medical & Healthcare.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March:

  • Clinical Consultants
  • Consultants
  • Senior TM1 Consultants
  • Navision / Nav Developer / Consultant
  • Senior NetSuite Consultant / Business Systems & Technology Manager
  • Climbing Arborists / Groundies / Estimator / Consultant
  • Technology, Strategy & Procurement Consultants

These roles were based in Brisbane QLD and Perth WA, with the majority being in Sydney NSW.

Design & Architecture

The Design & Architecture category has had a fairly slow start to the year, with four jobs being advertised as offering employer sponsorship in January and February; and two jobs during the month of March.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March:

  • Architect / Interior Designer
  • Mid to Senior Interior Designer or Architect

These positions were based in Sydney NSW and Brisbane QLD.

Education & Training

The boom in Education & Training jobs offering employer sponsorship in Australia that we saw at the start of the year has continued. We saw 56 sponsored jobs advertised in this category during January and February; and a further 23 sponsored jobs advertised during the month of March.

This is excellent news for overseas teaching professionals, as there is clearly a shortage for your skills here in Australia!

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March:

  • Early Childhood Teachers
  • Centre Directors
  • Childcare Program Coordinators
  • Director Teachers
  • Universal Access Teachers
  • Tattooist / Cosmetic Tattoo Trainer

These positions were based in Sydney & Regional NSW, Perth & Regional WA, Melbourne & Regional VIC, Brisbane QLD, Darwin NT, Regional TAS and Regional SA.

Engineering

The engineering industry has been quiet for advertised sponsored vacancies this year, although March has seen a small handful, with nine jobs advertised that were offering employer sponsorship.

These have been obscure or specialised positions, rather than civil or structural engineering roles, which means more general engineering roles would be better found in the hidden job market.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March:

  • Broadcast Engineer
  • Commissioning Engineer
  • Formwork Engineer
  • Automotive Technician
  • Service & Support Engineer
  • Scaffolding / Formwork Design Engineer
  • Service / Quality Engineer

These positions were based in Brisbane QLD, Sydney NSW and Melbourne VIC.

Healthcare & Medical

The boom in sponsored Healthcare & Medical jobs also continues! We saw 279 sponsored jobs advertised during January and February this year; and March alone saw more than 300!

There has been a strong demand for GPs, nurses, and also a shortage of allied health professionals such as sonographers and physiotherapists; and veterinary practitioners.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March:

  • Registered Nurses (ICU, Scrub Scout, Orthopaedic, Aged Care, Cardiac Cath Lab, Forensic Mental Health, Theatre)
  • Registered Midwives
  • Account Director, Medical Communications
  • Client Results Executives
  • Consultants / Clinical Consultants
  • Regulatory Affairs Manager
  • GPs – VR or Non-VR
  • Echocardiographers / Cardiac Sonographers
  • Psychiatrist
  • Veterinarians & Emergency Veterinarian
  • Small Animal Medicine Clinician
  • Radiographers
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Sonographers

  • Product Manager – Clinical Care Digital & Connectivity
  • Resident Medical Officer
  • Veterinary Director
  • Intensive Care Registrar
  • Naturopath / Nutritionist
  • Podiatrist

These positions were spread all over Australia, both in regional areas and in the major cities of each State of Australia.

Hospitality & Tourism

The Hospitality & Tourism industry has continued to call out for qualified and experienced chefs this year, as well as other hospitality professionals; with 140 jobs being advertised with employer sponsorship offered during January and February, and 61 positions advertised during March.

  • Sushi Chefs
  • Sous Chefs
  • Malaysian Chef / Cook
  • Head Chef

These positions were based in Sydney & Regional NSW, Melbourne & Regional VIC, Perth & Regional WA, Hobart TAS, Regional QLD, Darwin & Alice Springs NT, Regional ACT and Adelaide SA; with the majority of these roles are based regionally (smaller towns in the country and coastal areas of Australia).

Human Resources & Recruitment

The year started out very busy for overseas skilled recruitment professionals, with 145 jobs advertised as offering 457 visa sponsorship during January and February. These numbers have dwindled a little, with only 35 jobs offering sponsorship during the month of March. However, this number is still relatively high compared with other professions offering sponsorship right now.

Unfortunately for HR professionals, the jobs being advertised so far this year have predominantly been for recruitment consultants and specialists; therefore more general HR roles will need to be sought out through the hidden job market.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March:

  • Recruitment Consultants (with specialisations in: Business Support, Temps, Accountancy & Finance, IT, Legal, Construction, Sales & Marketing, Medical)
  • Senior Recruitment Consultants
  • Talent Specialist
  • Account Manager / Client Relationship Manager
  • Recruitment Team Leader
  • Principal Recruitment Consultant
  • Recruitment / Business Development Consultant

These positions were based predominantly in the major cities of Australia, in particular in Sydney NSW and Melbourne VIC.

These positions were based in the major cities of Australia, predominantly in Sydney NSW and Melbourne VIC.

Insurance & Superannuation

The Insurance & Superannuation industry started extremely slow for sponsored employment; with only two jobs advertised during January and February; and none at all advertised during March 2016.

Sponsored job seekers in the Insurance & Superannuation profession would therefore need to utilise the hidden job market to find opportunities, and will have more success taking a more proactive approach to their job search.

Legal

Sponsored jobs for law professionals continue to be hard to find, with two positions being advertised during January and February, and three positions offered throughout the month of March.

As recommended for insurance professionals and other professionals who are having trouble finding jobs offering employer sponsorship, accessing the hidden job market is my recommendation for opening yourself to more opportunities.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March:

  • Qualified Patent Attorneys
  • Trainee Patent Attorney

These positions were based in Sydney NSW and Melbourne VIC.

Manufacturing, Transport & Logistics

During January and February of this year we saw a couple of jobs advertised offering employer sponsorship; and three more appeared during the month of March.

Although they weren’t specifically for logistics professionals, they were listed under the manufacturing, transport & logistics category, and were more manufacturing and mechanical type roles.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March 2016:

  • General Manager – Meat Processing
  • Diesel Mechanic – Transport Company
  • CNC Operator

These positions were based in Brisbane QLD and regional NSW.

Marketing & Communications

Marketing & Communications positions have slowed down since the start of the year; having seen eight positions offering employer sponsorship in January and February; and only two advertised during the month of March.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March:

  • Head of Growth (Digital / Tech focus)
  • Digital Marketer / Growth Hacker

These positions were based in Sydney NSW and Adelaide SA.

Mining

As mentioned in the last market update, the mining industry in Australia has been on the decline for quite some time now, so it is no surprise that so are the number of sponsored jobs in this field.

This is unfortunate for mining specialists who are hoping to find sponsored jobs in Australia. The reality is, there are very little jobs for local workers, which means very little chance for overseas workers to be considered.

To find a sponsored job in this field will be the most challenging of all occupations; and will require you to be at the right place at the right time; and will likely heavily depend being connected to the right people. You will therefore need to focus heavily on networking and using the hidden job market.

Although there were only a couple of positions advertised during January and February of this year, there were actually more positions advertised during March, with 12 jobs advertised for geologists only.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March 2016:

  • Senior Geologists
  • Development Geologists

These positions were based in Adelaide SA, Brisbane QLD, Perth WA and Sydney NSW.

Retail & Consumer Products

The Retail & Consumer Products industry has seen a slight increase in demand in March, after January and February advertising five positions; and March offering four positions with employer sponsorship.

The positions advertising sponsorship in the field of Retail, in particular, are tending to be in the major cities of Australia so far this year.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March 2016:

  • Area Manager
  • Retail Manager – Pharmacy
  • General Manager – Meat Processing
  • Regional Manager

These positions were based in Brisbane QLD, Sydney NSW and Melbourne VIC.

Sales

The sales industry in Australia has seen a considerably high demand for experienced overseas professionals this year, with 27 jobs being advertised in January and February this year; and a whopping 24 being advertised during the month of March alone.

This is great news for sales professionals with a dream of migrating to Australia. I expect to see continued demand for overseas sales professionals as we progress through 2016.

The following were the jobs that were advertised during March:

  • Business Manager, Medical Communication
  • Sales Engineers / Engineer / Structural / Civil / Engineering
  • Sales Manager (Events, Conferences & Workshops)
  • New Business Telesales Consultant
  • Business Development Manager
  • Sponsorship Sales Manager
  • Sales Representative
  • Telesales Executive
  • Sales Executive
  • Conference Producer
  • Sales Consultant
  • Business Development / Appointment Setting

These positions were mostly based in Sydney NSW, with a handful of roles being based in Brisbane & Gold Coast QLD, Perth WA, Melbourne VIC.

Science & Technology

The field of Science & Technology continues to be extremely slow for employer sponsorship seekers; with only five positions advertised during January and February, and none at all advertised during March 2016.

Science-focused professionals are therefore recommended to focus on the hidden job market when seeking sponsored positions; and you can learn more about how to access and make the most of the hidden job market by clicking here.

Sport & Recreation

Although there were no positions advertised in this field in March 2016, the fact that there were two positions advertised earlier in the year is a very good sign for professionals in the sport and recreation field.

I expect this occupational category to see more sponsored jobs offered as the year progresses; and also recommend using the hidden job market to network and make the right connections, in order to open more opportunities in this field. After all, the hidden job market holds a huge amount of jobs that aren’t even advertised. It is therefore crucial for anyone who is not having success finding employment to tap into this abundant source of sponsored jobs.

Trades & Services

2016 is the year for Trades & Services professionals to find employer sponsorship!

The start of the year saw more than 320 jobs offering employer sponsorship (January and February), and March has followed just as strong, with 124 sponsored jobs (457 visa) being offered.

Mechanics are particularly in demand right now; however, we’ve also seen boat builders, arborists, spray painters, panel beaters, picture framers and hairdressers & barbers in demand, among other Trades & Services professionals.

The jobs advertising 457 visa sponsorship in the Trades & Services category during March include:

  • Automotive Technicians & Mechanics (Audi, Volkswagen, BMW, Renault, Jaguar, Land Rover, Peugeot, Ford)
  • Diesel Mechanics / Heavy Truck Diesel Technicians
  • Service Advisor (Trucks)
  • HGV Mechanic
  • Agricultural Mechanic
  • Forklift Technicians
  • Carpenters / Joiners / Installers / Apprentices
  • Automotive Service Centre Managers
  • Workshop Controller / Assistant Workshop Managers
  • Sheet Metal Workers / Metal Processors / Finishers
